Bonsai Soil Blends - From general purpose use to custom-ordered blends, Bill's Bayou bonsai soil is the best you'll find in the New Orleans area.
Our soil is a blend of South Lousiana haydite and pine bark. This blend of organic and inorganic components give your trees the proper mix of moisture retention and aeration.
Properly maintained, your bonsai will not suffer the effects of clogged drain holes or the build-up of dangerous clay at the bottom of your pots.
Stone slabs make an excellent alternative to bonsai pots.
Pricing and more information is on our Stone Slabs page.
Bald cypress, boxwood, green island ficus are our focus species for bonsai material. However, these are only for sale at events such as the Louisiana Day of Bonsai (location shifts each year), and the Baton Rouge Midwinter Workshop which is hosted by the Louisiana Bonsai Society each year in January.
Availability of this material is spotty. Contact us and the email links below at any time to find out if we have any of these species in stock and ready for sale.
Upcoming Events:
The Louisiana Association of Bonsai Societies (LABS) will host it's annual "Louisiana Day of Bonsai" this September 17, 2016 in Kenner, Louisiana. Kenner is adjacent suburb of New Orleans. For more information, visit the Greater New Orleans Bonsai Society site at

Bill's Bayou will have plenty of soil, bald cypress, water elms (planera aquatica), and planting slabs available at this event!

Soil Pricing: $40 for 5 gallons
This is a flat rate for any blend of bonsai soil composed of at least 25% of any product except for charcoal products.
Charcoal is best at 5-8% of soil volume.
Our general purpose soil is blended at
50% haydie / 50% pine bark
Price: $40 for 5 gallons
Other blends can be made to order.
We recommend that trees which prefer a drier blend would do best in a mixture of 60% haydite / 50% pine bark. Depending on your own preference, watering schedule, and localized climate conditions, you may even wish to go as dry as 70% to 80% pine bark.
Tropicals tend to do well in wetter mixes of 40% haydite 60% pine bark.
Bald Cypress or other bog trees will do well with even smaller percentages of haydite.
